THE STORY BEHIND THE NAME OF THIS DESIGN:

36 years ago a woman at the age of 25 gave birth to her second child in Charlotte, North Carolina. Ever since that day, she has busted her ass to ensure that those two children were protected and well taken care of. That woman is Theresa. My rock, the center of my world, and my mother.

My mom was part of a military family. She was the dead middle child out of 5: 2 sisters and 2 brothers. They dealt with abuse for years as children and all haves scars, in different forms, from it. My mom in particular used the anger from her past to motivate her to ensure that she would lead a better life than she had to live in the past.

My mom and dad married young. We’re convinced it was because they were pregnant with my sister (but whose counting) and they divorced 13 years later. I was 12 yrs old. Throughout their time together and my upbringing, I remember us never really having money. This was all due to my dad’s spending habits. Spam was part of our weekly dinner routine and mom made a MEAN spaghetti right out of the box (as we would called it!). She always made the best out of a really bad situation. i believe she shielded us from a lot and never really wanted us to know just how poor we really were. Still to this day, spaghetti right out of the box is my favorite way to eat it. It’s my childhood. It’s nostalgia for me.

Growing up, mom was busy. That’s all i really knew. I do not have memories of her absence but there is no doubt I was aware of her determination and drive to succeed. My mom IS the real-life Beyonce, y’all. She attended law school (with a 4.0 GPA!), had a full-time job AND was a mother to two children under the age of 10 years old, all at the same time! (yes, I’m serious, read that again)

She was always our best friend. We could trust her. We could count on her. But when she laid the law down, you listened. She wasnt anyone you’d want to disrespect.

This piece was designed and named after her to represent how STRONG she is. It represents the solid, sturdy foundation she created for our family. It represents all of the times she told me exactly what i didnt want to hear but yet, she was right. It represents her perserverance. Yet, it also represents her kindness, her gentleness, her patience, and her grace.

If you’ve ever had a chance to get to know my mom. You are one of the lucky ones.

She is truly my very best friend. Our bond is 100% unbreakable. The legacy she has built in this world is remarkable. I can only hope to be half the woman she is one day. Good news! I’ve already got the genes :)
